“It’s a hundred and six miles to Chicago, we’ve got a full tank of gas, a half pack of cigarettes, it’s dark, and we’re wearing sunglasses.”

—John Belushi, in the iconic movie The Blues Brothers

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world... he has to walk into mine,” Casey grumbled, then smiled sheepishly. “Sorry, just doing a little fractured Bogart from Casablanca. So, what do you say, babe? Do you think he bought it?”

Alexandra collapsed onto the tufted leather couch in the library, feeling as if she were a horse that had just been ridden hard and put away wet. “‘Bought it’?” she repeated distractedly as she watched Casey pace the carpet, then said, “Oh, never mind. You mean, did he believe you’re really Beau Lindsey? I don’t know, Casey, I honestly don’t know. He’s even more intimidating in person than he is in his letters. So arrogant, so condescending and brusquely autocratic. In short, a typical English peer.”

“Yeah,” Casey answered, pausing at the drinks table to pour each of them a glass of wine. “He reminds me a lot of F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus—only not quite as carefree. You know, babe, we could spend the rest of our lives with you educating me about Shakespeare and the others, and me showing off my library of old movies.”

“Yes, why don’t we do that,” Alexandra said dully. “If we live that long...

“Okay, back to our boy Brooks. How about the business about India, when I couldn’t remember the name of that pasha, or whatever he was—” He shook his head. “Nope, Oscar hopes aside, I don’t think I can carry this one off. He’s a tougher audience than your father and the rest of them.”

Casey handed Alexandra one of the glasses, then tossed back his own in a single gulp and drawled, grimacing, “The bloody pasha? Sink me, Brooks, old man, but I haven’t the foggiest!”

Alexandra, still frightened, blinked back tears, wishing she could think of something brilliant to say, something that would make everything better. But when she opened her mouth all that came out was, “I know to stay away from the beach now, and from Dr. Williard as well, so you don’t have to worry about me. In point of fact, you’ve already saved my life. You’ve done what you believe you were sent here to do. I can leave for London by this afternoon. Do you think it’s time for another try at the bookcase?”

“Huh?” Casey asked, looking at her strangely, as if he had been deep in thought and missed what she’d said. “Sorry, I wasn’t listening. Alex....” he said, running a hand through his hair, unconsciously confirming what she had thought: he hadn’t been paying her the slightest attention. But he was really terribly handsome when he was distracted, even adorably so. “Alex, I met this gypsy the night before I traveled through time.”

He could have said any number of things that might have surprised her, but none more so than what he had just said.
